Head Start believes in family-style eating. What does that mean?
Family-style means that we put food in serving bowls and pass it around the table just like a family! Children help set the table, make their own food choices and help cleanup meals. Serving family-style meals allows children to practice self help skills, develop social and language skills, and practice good eating habits.
How much will my child eat at Head Start?
Morning students receive breakfast and lunch.
Afternoon students receive lunch and snack.
Full-day students receive breakfast, lunch and snack.
Portion sizes of foods served are appropriate for children ages 3-5 years old. Children are encouraged to taste all foods served at meals but are not forced to eat. At no time is food withheld as a punishment or given as a reward. All meals comply with USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) meal pattern requirements, which meets at least 1/3 of your child’s daily nutritional needs. A variety of foods are served, which broaden children’s cultural and ethnic experiences.
